if you've got traveling to do, temperatures will be fairly the same throughout the mid atlantic today. upper 80s to low 90s. as you look at the satellite and radar, not just here but up in pennsylvania, it's quiet now. quiet down through virginia. our weather front off the coast but it's another one that i'm expecting to step into the area tomorrow. some storms are on tap for saturday afternoon. today we have that quiet weather. look at all the sunshine and nice conditions at 8:00 a.m., 76. 87 by noontime today. we'll top out at about 90, about 3:00 or 4:00 today. danella? >> veronica, starting to see some delays if you're traveling i-270 southbound. you know how it goes. it's not terrible, though. you are slow, so if you're traveling southbound i-270 approaching 109. that's where you're first starting to hit the brakes. as you're making your way towards clarksburg road, it's a lot better. chopper 4 is checking out your delays as you travel southbound i-270 at i-. 0. it's not bad here either but you can see your volume is

increasing but as you 345ik your way towards the beltway, your travel lanes are open. let's head over to i-95 in maryland. 198, southbound here. really between laurel and beltway in both directions. no issues to report. southbound is about 64 miles per hour as you connect from the beltway to 216. that drive will take you just about nine minutes. eun, over to you. 6:02. one of our area's most prestigious football programs is being rocked this morning by a sex scandal. five dematha football players are sidelined after reports they hired prostitutes during their first road trip of the season. tracee wilkins is live with more. tracee, good morning. >> reporter: it really is sad because they won that game and off to a winning season after win that game in north carolina. but now there are allegations that some illegal activity also took place on that weekend. we're going to take you back to august 31st. according to the "washington

post," five dematha football players hired them. a parent of one of the accused players say the boy was able to sneak the girls in. they engaged in sexual activities with those prostitutes in a hotel room. the school officials will not confirm the following but the post reports that sources confirm that two players with drew from school this week. two others have been recommended for expulsion pending appeal and a fifth faces disciplinary actions today. the school officials told us they could not comment and asked that we use the quote that the principal gave "the washington post" that stated, in part, if people break team rules, there are team sanctions. and if people break school rule, there are school sanctions. dematha has another away game planned for this evening in an fap police. this will be their second game of the season. as far as we know, that game is still on as planned. i'm tracee wilkins, news4.

there is anticipation ahead of today's august jobs report. it will get more scrutiny than usual. it is also the first day of the final stretch of the presidential campaign season and several signs that hiring may be picking up. 163,000 new jobs were added in july. right now the unemployment rate stands at 8.3%. both president obama and republican challenger mitt romney will campaign in new hampshire today. this afternoon the president will speak at a museum in port smith and then travel to an event at the university of iowa. mitt romney will attend a ramally in new hampshire. his campaign also plans to release more than a dozen new television commercials today. four minutes after the hour. president obama tried to rally his base as the campaign transitions into a new phase. he spoke to a rousing crowd at the democratic national convention last night. the president outlined his accomplishments over the last four years. he also tried to show some contrast on hot button issues like the economy and health care

for seniorses. . >> i will never turn medicare into a voucher. no american should ever have to spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies. they should retire with the care and the dignity that they have earned. >> news4's jim vance was also at the convention. he has more on the challenge ahead for democratic delegates. >> the convention is over. the delegates have gone home. democratic officials are hoping that what they will do now is they will go home from charlotte and they will organize and they will motivate their neighbors and others to go out and give president barack obama four more years. it is said that all politics is local. if that is the case, local politicians have a lot of work cut out for them. in maryland, the president is expected to win handedly, so the focus will be there to go out

and shore up democratic efforts in virginia and in pennsylvania and other states that are not such sure things as maryland may be in this election. those two states, virginia and pennsylvania, are among what they traditionally call, and in this case, quite accurately, battleground area where's democratic victory is anything but certain. in virginia, the question of victory applies to not only to the president of contest, but also to the senate race. it is a tough battle there between tim kaine, one former governor, and george allen, another. that is up in the air and certainly to be decided later. for the district, it is unfortunately the same old story, no love, no respect. they're seated as far away as they could be, as anybody was. they tried to have a rally that fizzled and never did catch fire. and not a word was ever mentioned about the fact that more than half a million people do not have a vote in congress.

i'm mem hlissa mollet in th newsro newsroom. prince harry is in afghanistan. this is p prince's second deployment and will be there for four months and serve as an apache helicopter pilot in helmand province. that's where he lid in 2007 and 2008 as a forward air controller. his new commander says he extends a warm welcome to him and asked that the prince is allowed to focus on his duties to deliver support to troops on the ground. prince harry returned four years ago when news of his first deploy tment got out. but things are different this time after he needs some positive press after his trip to las vegas last month. we're also following breaking news out of china.

at least 43 people are dead. hundreds more injured in an earthquake in southern china. it was a 5.6 magnitude quake. it hit around midnight our time. this is video coming into the newsroom showing the moments after the earthquake. look at this. large crowds of people gathering outside that area. officials estimated 100,000 people in at least 20,000 homes suffered some damage. at least a dozen aftershocks have hit that province. california also had an earthquake this morning. 3.5 quake rattled the beverly hills area. firefighters say there is no damages or injuries to report. a person in west virginia among three confirmed deaths linked to a virus in yosemite national part. 12,000 people have been exposed to the virus between june and august. it spreads through deer mice. campers who said in a certain cabin in yosemite are at a certain risk. they have not released the

victim's identify from wut virginia. the person visited the park in june. the victim of an air scare hoax is behind bars. huld from a us airways flight yesterday after police received a call he was carrying a dangerous substance. that turned out to be a hoax and his exgirlfriend is now being questioned. made it to dallas ft. worth and arrested for outstanding warrants. he has been charged for drug possession and theft before. maryland and d.c. have already banned using handheld cellphones while driving. soon, the ban could be in place for the entire country. the governor's highway safety association recommended a national ban on handheld cellphone use while behind the wheel. right now ten states in the district ban handheld cellphone use. experts say while hands free devices still distract drivers, a handheld ban would be a step in the right direction. this weekend fan can honor the man who brought football

marks from rockets that landed the rowe ver. it will spend the next two years on mars while exploring the crater. today nasa will perform another test here. crews at langley research center will drop the orion into a tank of water to test impact of the spacecraft in is video tr earlier testing. testing began last summer. nasa hoping to launch orion into space in 2014. it will travel farther than any human spacecraft has gone in more than 40 years. ben and jerry's ice cream is suing an adult film company for similar use of its name. it says ben and cherry's which sells x-rated dvds is violating its trademark. the ice cream company says film producers are smearing its reputation and ben and cherry's make dvds based on popular ice cream flavors. the film can cause confusion or

welcome back. chest x-ray or mammograms before age 30 mayen crease the risk of breast cancer among women who carry the gene for the disease. researchers rookd at nearly 2,000 gene carriers and their history of chest radiation. women who had any exposure to these types of radiation during their 20s were 43% more likely to develop breast cancer than those not exposed. exposure before the age of 20 increase the risk by 62%. you've heard of preparing in case of a flood, earthquake, or maybe a fire. what about the zombie apocalypse? fema is urging citizens to be ready for that. it's part of real campaign to get people ready for real emergencies. fema recommends having an emergency evacuation plan, a change of clothing, freshwater, and extra medication on hand because all of that will protect

delay on the orange and blue line thanks to an earlier disabled train. it's gone. still seeing delays on the orange and blue line. aaron, over to you. this morning the naacp is demanding answers. this is after a district heights police officer shot a man who was already under arrest. police say they arrested calvin kyle for trying to steal a motorcycle yesterday afternoon. this was on foster street near marlboro pike. kyle tried to run away and that's when the police fired. they tell us they saw the shooting. >> three police cars came up, he was not supposed to fire at that boy. >> now, kyle's condition is not known at this time. the officer who shot him, sergeant johnny riley, was placed on routine leave during an investigation that is being handled by the prince george's county police. 6:33. right now, d.c. police are on a hunt for a car that hit a metro

bus and took off. it happened around 9:30 last night on alabama avenue southeast. five people on the bus were hurt. they're all expected to be okay. police are looking for a blue sedan with tinted windows and cream wheels. health officials confirmed d.c.'s west nile related death this year. we're told an elderly man in the northwest died from the virus. this comes a week after maryland reported 21 cases and its first death from the infection which is commonly spread by mosquitos. virginia has five confirmed cases but no fatalities. this is 2 the last day on the job for prince george's county superintendent william hi tex te. it is currently looking for a permanent replacement. and in a few hours we'll find out which local schools are named among the best in the nation. education secretary arnie bun can wi arne duncan will speak at arlington traditional school. they recognize the schools for

students achieved at high levels over the achievement gap is narrowing. coming up on 6:35 now. a maryland state trooper lucky to be alive this morning after a terrifying accident was caught on his dash cam. look at that. the trooper was making a traffic to the on interstate 70 in washington county back in june. as you saw in the video here, a tractor trailer sideswiped his car, clipped him. amazingly, he escaped serious injury here. he is undergoing physical therapy for injuries to his shoulder, back, and legs, as well as post-concussion syndrome. >> sometimes i look at it and it just doesn't seem like the light is at the end of the tunnel. but i'm able to walk. i'm doing a lot of physical therapy to try to get back. >> doctors are not sure when the trooper will be able to return to work. the truck driver paid a fine for breaking the move over law. it requires drivers to lower our

homeless after hurricane isaac are here in d.c. nine dogs from flooded mississippi shelter arrived at the washington animal rescue league in the northwest yesterday. they are transporting dozens of dogs to shelters with available space. four of the dogs are puppies. those little black puppies you just saw there. they're going to be ready for new homes in a couple of weeks. the adult dogs will be checked out to see when they will be ready to be adopted. all very cute. >> lots of new pups at the shelter. >> don't you want a new puppy? >> me? 6:41. >> time for weather and traffic on the ones. >> toss know, sure. i want one, too. maybe two or three. >> oh, no. >> they're cute. yeah. let's look outside right now. looking at some quiet weather. just a few scattered clouds. it's down around culpeper, virginia, where i'm seeing the fog we talked about earlier today. as far as temperatures go throughout the area, take a look. we're in the 60s. mid 60s to upper 60s.
